New details are emerging following recent reports of mail theft and “check washing” impacting residents in our community.
A letter from the United States Postal Service Office of Inspector General, dated April 27, 2026, confirms that federal authorities have been actively investigating complaints tied to stolen and altered checks.
According to the letter, the investigation began after concerns were raised regarding a Baltimore-area resident whose mailed checks were allegedly stolen, altered, and cashed.
Federal investigators say they have identified an external mail theft ring responsible for stealing collection mail from post office locations across Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Virginia.
This confirmation comes amid growing concern from residents in Park Towers West and numerous residents within the building where multiple incidents of stolen and “washed” checks have recently been reported.
