A young boy, approximately 11 years old, was riding his bicycle on Greenspring Avenue in traffic, despite the new bike lane being available.

He was riding very close to my car, so I honked and told him that he should be using the bike lane for his own safety. Unfortunately, he responded in a very unpleasant and disrespectful manner.

Parents, please remind your children about bicycle safety and following the rules of the road. And when someone is genuinely trying to help keep them safe, they should know to respond politely and respectfully.

A little awareness and respect can go a long way toward keeping everyone safe.
