U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is planning to purchase thousands of specialized gloves capable of delivering painful electric shocks to individuals who resist officers, according to the Associated Press.

The Department of Homeland Security says ICE could spend up to $20 million on the devices, known as the G.L.O.V.E. — Generated Low Output Voltage Emitter — with purchases planned by March.

The gloves function like regular patrol gloves until an officer activates their electrical mode. When placed directly against a person’s skin, they deliver what the manufacturer describes as a painful stimulus designed to quickly gain compliance.
