Maryland health officials are warning swimmers about Vibrio vulnificus, often referred to as flesh-eating bacteria, which has been found in Maryland waters including the Chesapeake Bay.

Officials say there have been 29 confirmed cases so far this year, along with nearly 100 probable cases. The bacteria is more common in warm water and can enter the body through open cuts or wounds.

Anyone with an open wound should avoid bay water or cover the wound with a waterproof bandage. If a wound is exposed to bay water, wash it right away with soap and clean water.

Anyone who develops redness, swelling, severe pain, fever, blistering or drainage after being in the water should seek medical attention immediately.
