A Maryland delegate has been showing up to legislative sessions, voting “present,” and then leaving — while placing a statue of Aristotle in his seat as a form of protest.

Del. Eric Bouchat, who represents Carroll and Frederick counties, has followed this pattern for nearly a month during the current legislative session. He says the move is meant to highlight what he views as the lack of influence Republican lawmakers have in a Democrat-controlled legislature.

Bouchat stated that Republican votes “don’t matter” due to the Democratic supermajority, arguing that meaningful impact happens behind the scenes rather than on the House floor.

He also cited financial pressure from his private business as a factor in leaving Annapolis shortly after roll call.

The decision has drawn criticism from constituents, who say elected officials are expected to remain present and actively participate in legislative proceedings.
