Work is progressing on the project to replace the 153-year-old B&P Tunnel underneath Baltimore, a major speed bottleneck for Amtrak and MARC trains running on the northeast corridor.  Once completed, the new Frederick Douglass tunnel will allow train speeds of up to 100mph, significantly improving travel times over the current 30mph slowdowns in the old tunnel.

The project redesign includes reducing excavation needs in certain places, doing more construction in parallel when feasible, and eliminating a ventilation facility in West Baltimore that was one of the causes of a civil rights complaint.

Workers are currently constructing one of the two tunnel boring machines which will dig the new tunnel, starting in 2028.  The project is projected to be completed in 2036.
