Thanks to a tip from a Baltimore Scoop follower, we have received a report of buggy Kale purchased at Safeway.

A reminder that fresh kale requires proper washing and checking for insect infestation. STAR-K notes that kale can be particularly difficult to clean because insects can hide in the folds and curls of the leaves.

STAR-K’s thrip-cloth method for kale:
• Wash the produce well.
• Fill a basin with water and add non-toxic dishwasher detergent until the water feels slippery.
• Agitate the kale vigorously in the solution for 15 seconds.
• Remove the kale and shake excess water back into the basin.
• Pour the water through a thrip cloth.
• Check the cloth over a light box for insects.
• If insects are found, repeat the process. STAR-K says this may be done up to three times. If insects are still found after the third attempt, the produce should not be used.
