The Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration is conducting a “thorough review” after some drivers were overcharged on their vehicle registration.  A number of drivers were charged higher registration fees because the MVA incorrectly listed their cars at a heavier weight.

In one example, a driver was refunded after discovering the MVA had classified a Hyundai Elantra as a 3,700+ lbs vehicle, when the car only weighs 2,976 lbs.  

To find the accurate weight for your vehicle, check the Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin.  It may also be listed in the manual, or on the doorjamb.  The MVA says to contact the agency if your registration weight is listed as heavier than the accurate vehicle weight.
