Baltimore City is facing renewed scrutiny over its finances as city employees have spent approximately $1.5 million on travel so far this year, including trips to conferences and seminars in Hong Kong, Amsterdam and Las Vegas, according to FOX45.

The spending comes as outside fiscal watchdogs raise concerns about the cityโ€™s financial position. Truth in Accounting recently gave Baltimore a โ€œDโ€ grade and estimated that each taxpayer would need to contribute roughly $14,000 to cover the cityโ€™s unfunded obligations.

The Reason Foundation also reportedly gave Baltimore five financial red flags, placing the city among major U.S. cities it identified as experiencing a high level of financial stress.

Critics are calling on city officials to rein in spending, particularly travel expenses, warning that taxpayers could ultimately be left covering the growing financial burden.

Baltimore operates on a budget of $3 billion.
